With no progress to report on the ongoing labor dispute, the NHL is reportedly set to cancel the Winter Classic by the end of the week.
Canadian network TSN cites a source as saying the league will make the official cancellation on Friday. That is the deadline in the NHL's contract with the University of Michigan that allows the league to cancel the event for only the cost of the initial $100,000 deposit it made to rent the stadium, according to the report.
The event was to be the biggest and best featuring the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs. A record crowd of more than 105,000 fans was expected on January 1 in Ann Arbor.
The NHL has already cancelled all games through the end of November as a result of the lockout that began at the end of the day September 15th.
