Here's a story from the Town of Elma that helps to remind you that people here in Western New York really do pull together to help someone in trouble.

It happened about 5:00 Wednesday evening when a car traveling east along Jamison Road suddenly veered off the road just east of Ostrander Road. The car just missed utility poles but did strike a large pine tree which caused it to roll over on its roof with the 17 year old female driver and her 12 year old passenger trapped inside.

People driving by and neighbors rushed to the overturned 2000 Nissan Altima  to help. Several men then jumped in to literally lift the car to free those inside. The younger girl was removed but an EMT and arriving Jamison Road firefighters had to use the jaws of life device to get the 17 year old driver out from the compressed wreckage.

One man contacted 2 On Your Side to give us this account :"An EMT had come up and we went to the other side of the vehicle and he crawled underneath and found that indeed there was a driver there and she was having severe difficulty. She couldn't breathe. And then suddenly there were two other men by my side and we lifted the car so he could position her head to breathe."

Michael Lock, a former volunteer firefighter who lives nearby the crash scene,  says he also used a special tool to help stabilize the car and jack it up so it would stay up. Others actually piled rocks to help hold up the vehicle.

The Insurance Institute lists the weight of the car at just over 3,000 pounds.

Sheriff's Investigators say the 17 year old driver was flown by Mercy Flight to ECMC where she is listed in critical condition. The 12 year old girl was taken to Women and Children's Hospital where she is in stable condition.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
