ATTICA, N.Y. (AP) - Environmental officials say efforts to cool down a smoldering pile of smelly recyclables continue in Attica at Hillcrest Industries.

As of Tuesday, nearly 32,000 cubic yards of material had been moved and cooled down since Saturday. That's about half the 40-foot pile, which has been burning and giving off a foul odor in Attica, east of Buffalo, for months.

The Environmental Protection Agency is overseeing the work. The agency says that while the smell continues to be a nuisance, air monitoring shows either low or non-detectable levels of volatile organic compounds.

The pile is on the site of Hillcrest Industries, which uses recycled glass to make sandblasting materials. The company hasn't commented.
