CLYMER, N.Y. -- Hundreds of people packed into the Clymer Central Schools gymnasium Monday night to share stories, tears and laughs as they cope with the loss of their superintendent, Keith Reed.

Reed, who had served as superintendent in Clymer for around 10 months, was murdered late last month, according to the Chautauqua County sheriff. His alleged killer is now fighting extradition to face second degree murder charges.

Inside the service, students and co-workers of Reed described him as a "super superintendent" and someone with an "open-door policy."

The administration asked that cameras not be brought into the public memorial service.

2 On Your Side spoke with Roeanne Faulkner outside the school. She taught at Clymer for 23 years before recently retiring. She said Mr. Reed's style as superintendent nearly convinced her to return to teaching.

"They're going to miss him and remember him," she said, adding that "he was so well-liked, and a real good superintendent for students."

Dr. David O'Rourke, the superintendent at Erie 2 BOCES -- which covers Clymer -- spoke on behalf of the school board.

"A close-knit community, a small community feels it all the more," Dr. O'Rourke said. "I think a small community like this, they feel very connected and close to a superintendent."

This superintendent was one-of-a-kind. Speakers at the memorial told stories of how Mr. Reed gave students high fives in the halls and even rode a tractor in the parking lot.

He loved playing golf and landscaping.

He was always smiling.

One student said you couldn't help but enjoy going to school because you knew Mr. Reed would be there at the door to greet you.

"Keith Reed was known as a young superintendent who could connect personally with students in this community," O'Rourke said.

Reed's three daughters, his brother and his parents attended the memorial service. He was 51 years old.
