ATTICA, NY-- Efforts to rid the village of Attica from a putrid odor coming from Hillcrest Industries continues throughout the day and night.
The EPA tells 2 On Your Side the contractors working on a pile of smoldering recyclables have removed 10,700 cubic tons of material from the site.
EPA officials say work crews are removing cooler parts of the 40-foot, one-acre pile to another part of the facility so they can get to the hotter part of the pile.
Materials being removed from the pile are about 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
The EPA says it's going to take longer than expected. The good news is, there's been little to no contamination off-site, but there is still an odor.
The contractor is bringing in extra equipment to separate and extinguish the burning material, and employees are working 12-hour shifts.
