ATTICA, N.Y. -- Residents and especially parents in Attica have raised some concerns about the clean up process that will take place in Attica this weekend, as workers will try to get a stinky pile of burning glass under control.

At tonight's school board meeting in Attica, the board said the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has hired an outside agency to do the clean up work at the Hiilcrest facility.  Superintendent Bryce Thompson said cleanup will start Saturday and will last round the clock.  Thompson adds the Wyoming County Health Commissioner will decide Sunday whether Monday's school classes will be affected by weekend clean up.

Also,a woman with the Attica Youth League, a youth football league, contacted us with concern about games they have scheduled for Saturday.  Their games will take place near the clean up site, and they heard about the EPA's plan to try to separate part of a burning recyclable pile that's sending the foul odor throughout the town and village.

Saturday, workerswill try to douse the fire.  But the EPA admits some of the debris will be stirred up during the process.  The youth league organizers are concerned because 100 football players and their families will be at a nearby field.

Thursday, EPA representatives went door to door, to alert residents that Saturday's process will be safe.  But some are not satisfied with the EPA's assurances.

"We're gonna be misting it (the pile)," said Mike Basile from the EPA.  Basile adds the misting will prevent large amounts of material from the pile from becoming airborne, similar to the way a demolition site is misted.

He said the EPA will be monitoring the air around the site Saturday and if there is any noticeable impact to the surrounding community, the job will be shut down.

The concerned parents are still in the process of deciding whether to play, postpone, or move the games scheduled for Saturday.
