CLYMER, NY - The superintendent of the Clymer Central School District was found dead Monday and the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department is calling it a homicide.
The body of Keith L. Reed Jr. was found in the woods behind his home on County Route 15, also known as the Clymer-Sherman Road. Chautuaqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace said Reed had been shot multiple times.
The school chief had been reported missing Sunday. A department canine found the body during a search of Reed's property. Gerace and Chautauqua County District Attorney David Foley remain on the scene.
The school district's website reports that all activities in the district, including tonight's School Board meeting, are cancelled.
The district released the following statement Monday afternoon:
We are saddened to tell you that the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department has informed us this morning that Superintendent Keith Reed, Jr. was found deceased following a search that was initiated last night.
We became concerned that the Superintendent was missing after he did not immediately return phone calls as he typically does.
We express our deepest sympathies to his family and close friends. Grief counselors will be available to assist faculty, students and parents throughout the week.
This unfortunate matter is being handled by the Sheriff's Department and further communications will come from their office.
Reed was appointed to the post in November, 2011. He earned his bachelor's degree from St. Bonaventure and served in several teaching and administrative posts in Central New York prior to his appointment at Clymer.
Those who knew the superintendent are already sharing their shock and sadness on Facebook.
