NIAGARA FALLS, NY - Niagara Falls Police have confirmed they have found a bag of human remains belonging to Loretta Jo Gates, whose torso was found by Canadian police last week.
The discovery was made Sunday at Duck Island in Hyde Park. Detectives say a passerby discovered a bag in the lake and pulled it to shore. Once opened, they discovered the remains.
"It's just sick ... sick," said her aunt, Peggy Leone, who was one of the first to arrive at Hyde Park after learning the remains belonged to her niece.
Gates' torso was discovered on the Canadian side of the Niagara River last week.
Loretta Gates of Niagara Falls vanished on August 25th. Police officials say Gates, a 30 year-old mother of three, was last seen in the area of Main Street and Niagara Avenue in Niagara Falls, NY. Her family says she told her mother that she would be back in 15 minutes. That was the last anyone saw, or heard from her.
Friends and family of Gates held a vigil on Friday night to honor her memory.
"Then she's got a closure," said her aunt Michele Eodice, referring to the recovered remains in Hyde Park. "And then we can move on and help her with rest of the investigation and catch this monster that did it."
