LOCKPORT, N.Y. - A man who called 911 threatening to commit suicide was found dead after a long standoff Saturday.
Police say the Willow Street resident called Lockport Police Dispatch around 5 p.m. threatening to kill himself. While attempting to communicate with the man, the dispatcher heard several loud bangs over the telephone line.
Patrol officers responded and surrounded the home but were unable to contact the resident.
Several homes in the area were evacuated along with the Willow Street Park, located directly across the street.
Over the next five fours, Lockport Police hostage negotiators attempted to make contact with the resident without success. Officials also fired tear gas into the home in an attempt to force the resident out.
The Emergency Response Team eventually forced its way inside the home through barricaded doors and found an elderly female on the first floor of the house. The original called was found on the second floor dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
The elderly woman was reportedly in "emaciated" condition and taken to Eastern Niagara Hospital for medical treatment.
Police are still investigating the incident.
