BUFFALO, NY - The gas tax paid by motorists in New York State is the highest in the nation.

The American Petroleum Institute shows how New York beats Connecticut and California. In New York, nearly 70-cents per gallon is for taxes.

Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski of GasBuddy.com says the taxes are "a way to generate revenue for the government."

New York caps its taxes to the first $2 per gallon. When prices at the pump go up, there is no additional benefit to the state.  However, that is not the case for the County. There is no tax cap on gas in counties, so when prices rise, the county gets more money.
