TONAWANDA, NY - The City of Tonawanda is now moving forward with a plan to install a special safety warning sign for motorists on a residential street to help protect a child with autism.
A sign similar to those seen on playgrounds will be placed on Frederick Road at the request of Chuck Gilbert, whose child has autism.
Mayor Ron Pilozzi told 2 On Your Side Saturday that he agreed with the request but first had to make sure that the city had the legal right to put it up.
Pilozzi said, "I spent a considerable amount of time yesterday along with our deputy city attorney researching this and come to find out, the laws pretty much say we can put the sign up." He signed an order late Friday to have the sign installed.
The state DOT does require communities to seek its approval before speed limit and other such road signs can be posted.
