NIAGARA FALLS, NY - A local hero has come forward and adopted three golden retrievers who landed in the SPCA of Niagara after their owner died in a terrible accident.

70-year old Pascal "Pat" Scrufari jumped into Hyde Park Lake to save his dog. Scrufari was taking a walk with his three golden retrievers when one got loose and fell through the icy waters into the lake.

Rescuers were able to get Scrufari out of the water quickly, but not in time to save him. He passed away shortly after.

We received dramatic photos showing the desperate attempt by rescuers to reach him. The photos were taken by Niagara Gazette photographer James Neiss.

You can even see two of the dogs standing watch over the rescue.

The SPCA of Niagara took all three dogs in and took care of them before they were adopted. They say the dogs are healthy and in good condition.

Brandy Scrufari, President of the Board of Directors at the SPCA of Niagara said, "A lot of golden retriever fans in Western New York have been calling the shelter. What we want to stress is that we want to keep all three dogs together."

Scrufari just happens to be the cousin of Pascal "Pat" Scrufari.

And that is exactly what Frank Cacciatore did. He adopted all three dogs. He says the three golden retrievers are getting along well with his children and 10-year-old golden retriever.

We'll have more much on this heart-felt adoption story tonight on Channel 2 News at 6 and 11pm.
