BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo School Board is one step closer to adding a student representative to sit in on board meetings.

Board President Louis Petrucci told 2 On Your Side this is a unique opportunity for the Board to get a student's perspective on the policies they pass.

The position was discussed during a board meeting Thursday morning. Petrucci said once a student is picked to fill a seat at the table, they would serve in a limited non-voting capacity. The student won't be allowed to sit in on an executive session especially when it comes to personnel matters.

Several schools throughout the State already have "Student Reps," and Petrucci said right now it's all about finding the right student to fill that role.

"That's why we leave it up to the Inter-High Council which compose of 2 representatives, one Junior, one Senior from each of Buffalo's Public High Schools. We thought that would be the best place to start because these children have been identified by their peers as leaders and we thought they would be able to identify who the best person is,"said Petrucci.

Only a student who is a Senior in high school, and in good academic standing would be allowed to join the school board.

Channel 2's Pete Gallivan's niece is a "Student Rep" at her high school in Rochester. She will be in Buffalo next week for a scheduled meeting with the school board members.
