CHAUTAUQUA, NY - In the late '90s, Leslie Carter was a rising teen singer. She was also the sister of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter and younger brother, Aaron, also making big names for themselves as top selling recording artists. Now her family is in mourning over her death. Carter died in a Western New York hospital this week.
Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace told 2 On Your Side that he is still waiting for autopsy reports to come back, before he will officially say what caused Carter's death. The original police report released on Thursday said she died of an overdose of prescription drugs.
The 25-year old was not only a singer, but one of the stars of the "House of Carter" reality TV show. She was pronounced dead just before 5pm Tuesday at Westfield Memorial Hospital in Chautauqua.
Sheriff Gerace tell us his department received a call a little after 4pm on Tuesday about an unresponsive women at the Carter residence in the Town of Chautauqua. Other media sources have reported that she recently moved to a relative's home there.
According to the incident report, Carter was home with her 10-month old baby and another family member. The report says she was in a depressed mood that day. The report also says Carter fell in the shower before she was helped the her bed where she fell asleep. A few hours later the relative noticed that Carter wasn't breathing, and attempts to revive her failed.
"It's not foul play," Sheriff Gerace said. "We're going to wait for the autopsy results and if that takes us to toxicology, we'll wait for those results."
Since news of her death, rumors of her potential prescription drug abuse. Gerace says he has heard about the rumors, but does not know if any where found at the home.
