LeROY, N.Y. - It is a case that has drawn national attention to the small Genesee County community of LeRoy.
15 students have now reported neurological tics, described as "Tourette-like symptoms". Dr. Laszlo Mechtler of the Dent Neurologic Institute diagnosed the students with conversion disorder, a psychosomatic syndrome that can be caused by stress and the power of suggestion.
Mechtler says that around 70 percent of the students originally began to show marked improvement, and when the national media attention began, about half of them saw their conditions worsen.
He claims that even now the patients who have kept to themselves have improved and are back to normal while the patients who have gone public continue to struggle with symptoms.
