The New York State Comptroller's office has referred to law enforcement a report which reviewed the financial records of the Village of Corfu Court.

The report does not specifically mention wrongdoing. But it does note a shortfall of over $10,000 dollars in the court's records from November 2009 through September 2011 and says there were adjustments to cover the shortage. It also states that the records were kept by the daughter of Justice Robert Alexander. The audit says she was fired by the Village Board last August because he did not get proper approval from the state to hire her. The audit also says the former clerk replied that she performed her job too quickly and made many errors.

Robert Alexander has served 22 years as the Village Court Justice. The Comptroller's Office is now calling on him to identify any defendants who may have overpaid fines for traffic tickets for speeding or offenses. They also want timely and accurate record keeping.

Alexander did not answer our request for a comment through the court. But he did tell the Comptroller's Office in his formal response that he has taken corrective actions and felt he had limited information about the scope of the audit.

The Village Board says it has no involvement in the matter but their attorney says they are closely monitoring the situation.
