BUFFALO, NY - Temperatures started falling and the winds picked up speed overnight, bringing a blast of snow to much of Western New York. The changeover occurred in the city of Buffalo around 3 a.m. Friday morning, quickly turning already wet roads into snow-covered slippery ones.

On the Interstate 90 heading south, plows were busy clearing the way. Channel 2 News photographer Jim Herr took a drive to the Southern Tier. He tells us the roadways were slick and gusting winds made for a very tricky drive in some spots.

An accident on the 90 near Indian Church Road in West Seneca caused problems for drivers heading east. The crash occured around 6 o'clock in the right lane. Traffic was backed up all the way past the 400. State Police tell us no one was hurt.

Conditions along Route 5 near Silver Creek were also very slick. Our news crew spotted a truck off the side of the road there around 8 a.m.

NITTEC says a total of 20 wrecks were recorned Friday morning. There were also a number of spin-outs that held traffic up throughout the morning.

The driver of a tractor-trailer is said to be ok after he rolled over on Route 5/20 in the Town of Alexander around 8:30 Friday morning near Sandpit Road. The truck was carrying eggs to be used for dog food but that ended up spilled in the ditch. No word on what caused the truck to roll.

NYSEG reported that about 6,500 customers in Erie County woke up without power. Most of the households affected were located south of the city of Buffalo. National Grid is reporting only sporadic outages around the city of Buffalo.
