DEPEW N.Y. - Shannon Ross of Cheektowaga went to K-Mart on French Road in Depew Monday afternoon to pay her layaway bill but was surprised when a stranger offered to pick up the tab.
Ross says a woman approached her as she was walking up to the layaway counter and told her that she wanted to pay the bill in full. Ross says it was more than $200.00.
"I was surprised... my heart was racing... I couldn't believe it -- I was like is she for real? She said it totally felt good to be able to do it for somebody else -- to pay for somebody else.. And she was doing it in memory of her husband..."
Ross says the good samaritan told her that her husband died in the crash of Flight 3407 and that she wanted to pay the bill for a stranger as it was something that would make her late husband smile.
The mother of 3 says she was shocked and kept thanking the woman over and over again. The stranger told Ross that she planned to pay for another layaway at the same store and that a friend of hers was doing the same thing at another K-Mart location.
K-Mart declined our request to enter the store, talk to the workers who completed the transaction or interview a manager.
Ross says she feels blessed and lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.
"It means a lot I mean -- that's money that I can spend more Christmas for my girls... Pay more bills... You know get more groceries... You know I can do so much more with that money. I actually at the end asked her if I could give her a hug and I said -- how do you say thank you and she said -- you just did."
