NIAGARA FALLS, NY - Niagara Falls is known for it's tourism during the summer months... but what about during the winter months? The Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation has come up with a plan to make tourism last year-round.
For this first time this year, Niagara Falls will be hosting a Holiday Market in true holiday fashion.
President of Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation John Percy spoke with 2 On Your Side on what this will do for the city. "Holiday Market gives us a chance to promote the destination during what is typically a slower period for Niagara Falls, so it helps us extend the season which is typically the summer season here in Niagara Falls," he said.
The market opens Friday November 25 and will remain open for the 37 days of the holidays until January 1, 2012.
Organizer Mark Rivers said the new market has already boosted tourism for the area. "We had a number of tour groups booked, trips to Niagara Falls specifically because of the market. It's something people enjoy during the holidays. It's a different kind of shopping. It's the anti-mall."
Groups from Ohio, New York City, Canada and Pennsylvania will be visiting the Falls to enjoy a unique setting for shopping, ice skating, food and hand-crafted gifts.
The idea of a holiday market comes the European style markets according to Rivers. Rivers says its "a European holiday market come to life on the streets of Niagara Falls."
