BUFFALO, NY-A former postal carrier Wednesday appeared in federal court Wednesday morning to plead guilty to mail theft.

According to the U.S. Attorney's office, Michael Vickery, 34, of Orchard Park, opened 23 pieces of mail and stole cash and lottery tickets totaling $281.

An investigation got underway last year after several residents of the Creek Bend apartments in Hamburg reported their outgoing mail had been tampered with.

Vickery will be sentenced in February and faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine or both.
