Typically, Wednesday is the cheapest day to travel, with Fridays and Sundays being the most expensive days. But does that apply all year round? What about during the holidays?

For a broad, cheap airfare search, Farecompare.com offers a Flexible Calendar, which sorts through hundreds of days, times, and airlines to find travelers the best deals available. Most money saving companies advise purchasing tickets at least 14 days in advance, although some now recommend purchasing as much as 30 days ahead of time. Opting for a flight with layovers costs significantly less than a direct flight, and discounts tend to be more favorable if tickets are purchased online. According to USA Today, Southwest and Spirit Airlines currently have no extra charge for tickets purchased over the phone.

Not yet a fan of Twitter? Those who are following Twitter accounts like @jetbluecheeps get exclusive bargains ranging from 24 hour deals to various discounts on ticket pricing. Looking for flights from a specific city? Twitter accounts such as @flyfromCHI (Chicago), @flyfromWAS (Washington), and @flyfromDEN (Denver) allow their followers access to selective deals from specific cities, with hundreds of cities to choose from.
Experts agree that holiday travelers who are willing to arrive a day earlier or leave a day later will get the better deal. Traveling on the holiday itself tends to ensure a cheaper ticket, but not everyone is willing to leave or arrive on a special day.

For specific holiday travel dates, Priceline.com suggests purchasing tickets for November 19th-21st, 24th, 25th, 29th, and 30th for Thanksgiving travelers. Around Christmas, Priceline predicts the best travel dates to be December 17th-21st, 24th, 25th, 27th, and the 31st.
