ATHOL SPRINGS, N.Y. - St. Joe's raised its record to 4-1 with a 27-20 win over St. Francis Saturday night.
Senior quarterback Chad Kelly led the way for the Marauders. In the first half Kelly was 5 of 13 and St. Joe's trailed by one, 7-6 at halftime. In the second half he lit it up. Kelly was 10 of 14 for 192 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. Kelly threw four touchdown passes, two to # 4 Kyle Briggs and one each to # 9 Rod Payne and # 7 Yanni Zuli. Briggs caught touchdown passes of 25 and 13 yards. Payne caught a 35 yard touchdown pass and Zuli hauled in a 29 yard touchdown pass. Kelly also ran nine times for 82 yards.
St. Joe's held Red Raiders running back Akeel Lynch to 96 yards on 22 carries. Lynch threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Jarrett Dolegala to open the scoring in the first quarter. Zach Wells returned a kickoff 78 yards for the first St. Francis touchdown of the second half. St. Francis drops to 3-2 on the season.
Marauders head coach Dennis Gilbert told Two On Your Side's Stu Boyar "they played hard, they fought hard, they were were resilient, they did what we asked them to do. They never quit, they kept on coming." Gilbert said in the first half "we had breakdowns inside, in the second half we squared things away and the receivers did a better job of coming back to the ball."
