CHEEKTOWAGA, NY - A local soldier is hoping to bring a stray dog who's had a "ruff" start home to the States and to a better life.

Staff Sergeant Robert Cook III of Cheektowaga is looking for help raising the $4,000 necessary to ship "Rio" from Kabul in Afghanistan. That money is needed to vaccinate, house, quarantine and transport the dog back to the U.S.

The pup was found shortly after its birth stuck in a compartment of a junk vehicle on base. It's not known how long she had been in there or when she had last eaten. At the time, Rio could not even stand, she was so weak and dehydrated.

Cook is halfway through his tour of duty. He is working with a British charity, Nowzad, to raise the money. Nowzad is a registered charity set up to relieve the suffering of stray and abandoned dogs, cats and donkeys in need of care and attention.

Donations are being accepted via a "chip-in" in Rio's name at http://nowzaddonations.chipin.com/rio.
