AMHERST, NY - One person was rushed to the hospital Monday morning after he crashed his car into a local fire department.

Police have identified the driver as 51-year-old Mark W. Detlef of Buffalo. He's been charged with Felony Criminal Mischief. According to police, the charge is for "intentional damage to property."

Police are still investigating and other charges are possible.

The call came in around 12:30am that a car had crashed into the front of the Main-Transit Fire Department on Main Street, ripping down the department's garage doors and causing part of the structure's brickwork to come tumbling down. Several fire trucks were also damaged by the impact.

According to Lt. Chris Meyer with the Amherst Police Department, Detlef had to be freed from the wreckage of the late-model Buick LeSabre and was taken to ECMC with serious injuries.

Investigators were on the scene Monday morning trying to determine a cause.  Meyer says the building will also be inspected to be sure it is still structurally sound.

Fire Chief Jon Kemp says the department is still assessing the damage, but he estimates it will be several hundred thousand dollars.
