BUFFALO, N.Y.- Public Service Announcements promoting "safe sleeping" practices will soon be appearing on NFTA buses and inside rail cars.

The messages will be written in both English and Spanish, urging parents to put their infants and young children to sleep on their backs, and telling them not sleep next to their children in chairs or sofas with soft pillows.

Erie County Social Services Commissioner Carol Dankert says since April, four infants or young children have died as a result of unsafe sleeping; 31 deaths in the county are attributed to the unsafe sleeping between January 2006 and June 2011.

The program will cost $8,000 and will be paid for by a New York State grant.

Erie County Executive Chris Collins was on hand for the announcement; he said the county chose this message because it hasn't been made a part of the public awareness in recent years.

"There hasn't been much done in the past five or six years, and there are new moms that may not have the same awareness," said Collins. "I think it's appropriate for every five or six years to bring this up, because unfortunately it's a problem that is not going away."

The campaign will run through January 2012.
