BUFFALO, NY - St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute took time on Sunday to honor four past students who made the great sacrifice in leaving the school to serve our country during World War II.

The four men were not able to finish out their high school careers upon returning to the United States.

The late James E. Cavanaugh, Urban A. Englert Sr., the late David J. Hunter Sr. and the late Robert L. Hedges all received honorary diplomas.

A mock graduation ceremony was held at the John S. and Charlotte C. Cullen Center for Music and Theater Arts at St. Joes. Family members of the men who have passed away accepted the diplomas on their behalf.

Urban Englert is the only surviving war veteran from the school during that time. He was called up and proudly walked across the stage to accept his diploma. Englert would have graduated with the class of 1944.
