LOCKPORT, N.Y. -- A section of South Transit Road in the City of Lockport will remain closed for at least two or three days due to a large sinkhole.

A neighbor spotted the problem Tuesday afternoon and reported it to police and city officials.

The mayor said a collapsed sewer line 25 feet below the ground caused the sinkhole.

Tuesday night, crews removed a power pole, enabling them to start digging to repair the rupture. After they're finished, workers will re-fill the hole and then re-surface the road.

Detours are posted between Lincoln Drive and Willow Street. Police will be on hand to help with traffic flow.

The mayor said the rainy weather could be to blame for the rupture.
