Clarence and Williamsville North had everyone on their edge of their seats Saturday afternoon at Clarence. When it was over the Red Devils had a 2 to 1 win over the Spartans in the Class AA baseball semifinals.
Clarence scored in the first and third. In the first Zach Lauricella singled home a run for the Red Devils. Lauricella doubled to start the thrid inning and eventually scored on a ground out by Pat Dougherty. Williamsville North got its run in the fifth inning.
In the top of the 6th the Spartans loaded the bases with one out but senior Mike Elwood pitched out of the jam. He was helped all day by great defense as the Red Devils turned inning ending double plays three times. In the sixth with the bases loaded shortstop Lauricella handled a tough grounder with two outs to retire the Spartans. The Spartans had two on with two outs in the 7th but couldn't push across the tieing run.
Elwood pitched complete game for Clarence. He allowed just two hits while striking out 4. He struck out the last batter to end it. Kyle Zurak took the tough loss for North. He struck out 7.
In a rematch of last year's Class AA championship game, won by Clarence, the Red Devils will again play Orchard Park. St. John's bound Zach Lauricella gets the start for Clarence.
