Community acitivist Kevin Gaughan who actively campaigned for reducing the size of local governments over the last few years, now has his eyes set on a new target.
Gaughan is making a proposal this week that every western new york voter be given the right to decide for themselves if they want to downsize and consolidate the number of school districts in Erie County.
Gaughan says Erie County not only has the highest concentration of towns and villages in America, it also has the highest concentration of school districts and administrators for the least amount of students. Gaughan told us Thursday night,
"It seems to me against the backdrop of our declining population and school enrollment that it's time to consider reducing overlap and administration offices so we can reduce taxes and efficiency in our school system."
Gaughan says Erie County has 29 school districts, but in North Carolina... Mecklenburg County has more students and only one district, and in Marion, Illinois, they have double the student population with only four districts. He believes with new leaner systems put in place, education will improve as well.
