BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The search is on for the serial killer who may be behind the murder of Melissa Barthelemy of Buffalo.
In December, Barthelemy's remains were found on a Long Island, NY beach. She was one four prostitutes found dead. They had all advertised their services on Craigslist.
Melissa Barthelemy appeared to have a promising future, according to her family. "I mean Melissa, she wasn't just a call girl, she was a daughter, a sister, a niece, a granddaughter," said her mother Lynn.
The case has hurt the family so much. Lynn says Melissa's grandmother was so distraught she became ill and died.
The family is downplaying reports that the serial killer may be linked to law enforcement or have knowledge of law enforcement investigative techniques. Lynn Barthelemy thinks the killer is "very intelligent."
Melissa moved from Buffalo to New York City to pursue her career as a hair stylist.
Now her family, especially her mother who can't sleep well at night wants the killer caught before other women go missing.
Monday, police searched the area and found more suspected human remains. Eight sets of human remains have been found since December.
"I think they're going to get him," Lynn said. "He's going to slip up sooner or later."
The Barthelemy family believes the killer may have used Melissa's cell phone to call Melissa's younger sister and say taunting things about the woman who was missing at the time.
"We kept the same phone number, so I'd just like to let this guy know that my daughter still has the same phone number and if you want to call, speak to me," Lynn said. "I'll answer the phone, would just tell him that we are going to catch him, and he's going to pay the price, and we're going to fight as hard as we can to take his life like he took all these girls' lives."
