LEON, N.Y. - A Cattaraugus County man has been arrested for allegedly falsifying business records while working for the Leon Fire District.

Frederick G. Weaver, Jr. was arrested after an investigation performed by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Office. Weaver is charged with falsifying business records and grand larceny.

Investigators say Weaver worked as treasurer with the Leon Fire District from of January 2008 to February 2011. Sheriff's Office Captain Robert Yehl says during that time, Weaver allegedly stole more than $30,000 from the district's savings account.

"He's an elderly man, said Yehl. "And he, was according to him having problems making ends meet. He hasn't received a raise with his social security in 3-years. So he took the money to help himself get by."

Leon business owner Joel Fiebelkorn says situations like this are becoming all too common.

"The money is too easily gotten a hold of by one person because its only in the control of one person. I think that there should be more than one person to have to speak for the money at any given time."

Weaver was arrested on Wednesday and arraigned at the Leon Town Court. He's due back in court within a few weeks.
