Backyard Hockey tournament for Hasek's Heroes charity

They were back on the backyard rinks this weekend for Hasek's Heroes Backyard Classic. It's a charity hockey tournament played by teens from various high school and travel teams to benefit the program set up by the former Sabres star goalie Dominick Hasek.

The goal is to help kids from needy families get the equipment and backing they need to learn how to play hockey and pick up some help with tutoring and life skills along the way. Hasek's Heroes operates out of the Riverside Rink in Buffalo.

The Backyard Classic was actually set up three years ago by Nick Penberthy who is now a 17 year old Williamsville North High School senior. Nick also organized the event this year and it has grown to 24 teams and 96 players.

And it has now expanded to a second rink. Chris Taggart was inspired by Nick to set up his own backyard rink program.

They hope to raise about $4,000 this year with the help of various donors and businesses which chip in to help the kids skate and enjoy.
