ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) -- If you start your car and go back indoors to let it warm up, you could get a ticket.

Under New York state vehicle and traffic law, it's illegal to leave a car running unattended with the keys in the ignition -- even if you lock the car door.

Now, down the thruway in Rochester, a new police detail will start enforcing the law to stop people from making themselves an easy target for thieves.

Police say recovering a stolen car takes a lot of time and effort and is costly for police as well as the victims. So they're hoping to prevent more thefts by ticketing running cars.

The violation carries a $130 fine.
