Labor Secretary Pushes Minimum Wage Hike

Department of Labor Secretary Thomas Perez used Labor Day as an opportunity to pitch president Obama's plan to raise the minimum wage.

Perez, a Buffalo native and Canisius High School alum, made note that CEO's sometimes earn nearly 273 times more than their workers.

"The challenge that we're confronting right now is to make sure we lift wages of everybody so that everybody can punch their ticket to the middle class, put money in people's pockets so they spend it so that employers hire at an even brisker pace," Perez said Monday.

A bill to raise the minimum wage was filibustered by Republicans in the Senate in April and has not come up for a vote in the House. The GOP says raising the minimum wage would hurt small business, leading to layoffs and hiring slowdowns.
