BUFFALO, N.Y.- New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced Monday that his office has recovered more than $17 million in restitution for almost 14,000 workers across the state.
Schneiderman praised his office for being tough, and said they will not let companies get rich by cheating employees.
"We will take action against wage theft, wage theft is not any different that car theft. it is not a smart business practice, it is a crime," Schneiderman said.
The attorney general's labor report found that some people working in the construction, car wash and fast food industries were being paid less than the minimum wage. Schneiderman says his office is aggressively enforcing existing wage laws.
