Olympic Dreams for Local Young Skiers

Young skiers at the Holiday Valley Training Center have an extra hop in their skiing right now.

Buffalo, NY — Fresh snowfall is here for ski areas and the Winter Olympics have begun, making most snow enthusiasts pretty happy. Especially for local young skiers at the Holiday Valley Training Center who compete at a local level but also dream big.

"Great just to see... seeing what other people can do and how good they are, you can learn from it," said Michael McGuire, a local competitive skier who is training with Holiday Valley. "I love skiing moguls....I would love to just continue skiing as long as I can."

Twin sisters Logan and Hayley Fredrickson are also part of the training center. They compete often and were just in a state competition at Holiday Valley a couple weeks ago.

"We started skiing when we were 2 years old... and at 7 we started racing. The Winter Olympics are pretty cool. And I'm excited to see the athletes compete," Logan Fredrickson said.

Miguel Azcarate is the head coach at the Holiday Valley Training Center, which currently has about 200 athletes. He says the sky is the limit for their athletes, but reaching that level is rare.

"Many athletes over the years, they have ended up in the Olympics," Azcarate said. "It's a tough road, it's a lot of years of hard work and perseverance. Olympics is a work in progress that sometimes takes 10 to 15 years to achieve that."
