Aquarium debuts new penguin exhibit

The Aquarium of Niagara just opened a new penguin exhibit.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY - A new penguin exhibit has just opened at the Aquarium of Niagara.

The exhibit features a 1,600-foot habitat which can hold up to 20 penguins, as well as a classroom, a quarantine holding center, and a vet center.

The Humboldt Penguin Exhibit, a $3.5 million project, was funded thought grants and donations, says the Aquarium.

According to the Aquarium, they can now apply for Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation, thanks to the exhibit. AZA accredits the best zoos and aquariums around the world, and that accreditation would allow the Aquarium of Niagara to bring in more penguins for their colony.

The Aquarium of Niagara is one of only 20 institutions in North America with Humboldt penguins, which are actually from Peru and Chile - not Antarctica.

More information on the exhibit can be found here.
