3 days later: Hundreds still without power after winter storm

The winter storm has come and gone, but hundreds are still without power around WNY.

Thousands of Western New Yorkers lost power Thursday night as wet snow and wind resulted in downed trees and power lines.

At 8 a.m. Friday, nearly 18,000 National Grid Customers were without power. Cattaraugus County had nearly 11,000 without power, and as well as more than 7,000 NYSEG customers.

With crews working around the clock to restore, here's a breakdown of the customers still in the dark, as of 11 p.m. Sunday.

NYSEG released the following statement Saturday afternoon.

NYSEG continues to make progress following a significant winter storm on Thursday. The storm resulted in more than 188,000 outages affecting both homes and businesses. As of 10:00 AM, 117,000 customers affected by the storm have been restored. The company expects more than 90% of customers affected by the storm in the Liberty and Brewster divisions including some of the hardest hit areas in Delaware, Dutchess, Putnam, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties restored by 11:45pm tomorrow night.

The wet, heavy snow on Thursday into Friday morning made it very difficult for crews to navigate through Western New York.

"What made this a challenge: It was very widespread," said Steve Brady, a National Grid spokesperson. "It hit all three divisions across upstate New York. And at the same time, every other utility on the East Coast was getting hit with something."
