ALBANY – A drug charge was dropped Friday against the former head of Citizens Union, a good-government group.

Dick Dadey had the seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance charge, a misdemeanor, dismissed after he completed a drug rehabilitation program, law enforcement officials said. He was charged in October.

In a statement Friday on Twitter, Dadey said he was "relieved" to have the case resolved.
"I accept full responsibility for the mistake I made and apologize without condition to those who placed their trust in me and who I failed," Dadey wrote.

Dadey, 59, of Brooklyn, headed the watchdog group since 2004, and he was a prominent voice at the state Capitol for government reform and new ethics laws. In September, the group said Dadey stepped down, citing personal reasons.

Betsy Gotbaum, the former New York City public advocate, has since been named the group's executive director.
