Batavia homicide victim identified

The Genesee County Sheriff's Office Wednesday identified the victim of a woman found dead Monday in a motel in the Town of Batavia.

TOWN OF BATAVIA, NY - The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the murder of a woman in Batavia who was found dead after placing a 9-1-1 call.

At a news conference Wednesday morning, deputies identified the victim as Sherri Butler, 58. They said there was a history of calls to the motel related to Butler, but would not disclose the nature of those calls.

Her next of kin has been found and notified, as of Wednesday afternoon.

Butler lived at the Sunset Motel since 2016. Deputies would not discuss possible suspects, but said there were no signs of forced entry into her room.

The Sheriff's Office said the call came in at 11:57 a.m. Monday. Butler was last reported seen there sometime over the weekend.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy ruled her death a homicide, saying she suffered "sharp force trauma to the artery."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 585-343-5000.
