ALBANY - New York women were paid 86 percent of what men made in 2016, new federal data shows.
A report Monday from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found the median weekly income for women working full-time jobs was $840 last year in New York, compared to $975 for men.
The percentage of women's pay to men's pay ranked New York eighth among the 50 states, though it declined slightly from a high of nearly 87 percent in New York in 2015, according to the report.
The lowest was in 2000 when New York women made about 79 percent of what men made.
Nationwide, women had a median weekly income of $749 or about 82 percent of the $915 that men earned in 2016, the data showed. Women fared best in Vermont, where they made 90 percent of what men made, and worst in Utah, where they made 70 percent.
Comparable data for men and women’s earnings is available going back to 1979 when women around the U.S. were earning about 62 percent of what men were earning.
Over the last 37 years the national earnings gap between the sexes has shrunk to about half of what it used to be, boosted by growth in the 1980s and 1990s, according to the report.
