Unique Eats: Wholly Crepe serves up French favorite

Buffalo, N.Y. — Just a short walk from the University of Buffalo's South Campus sits a part-restaurant, part-coffee shop, serving up sweet or savory crepes.

If you don't know, crepes are like a thin pancake with almost any filling you can imagine.

"We have sweet and savory crepes," Kamalie Liyanage, owner of Wholly Crepe, explained. "The sweet crepes generally have like Nutella and like fruit...some elements of fruit...sweet cream cheese."

Most popular on the menu for the sweet crepes is the monkey business with Nutella and bananas or the Lemon Ricotta with blueberries.

"There's a separate batter for savory crepes," Liyanage said. "And that we fill with turkey, chicken, mushrooms, spinach, cheese, whatever people would like that's on the menu."

Most popular on the menu for the savory crepes is the caprese with turkey, pesto and mozzarella cheese.

Liyanage said both sweet and savory batters are made fresh each morning from cage-free eggs and co-op owned flour.

While you wait for your crepe, there is coffee bought from local roaster Tipico and tea, too.

"Wholly Crepe was originally supposed to be a place for UB students to come, grab a quick bite, under 10 bucks, you know, affordable, and you know, eat it on the go," Liyanage said. "But then it morphed into something where people come and chill here."

Liyanage, who was a UB graduate, said she created a space she always wished was available during her college years: a place to study, read, play or chat. And she hopes it can be an open environment where creative ideas and crepes can be shared.

Wholly Crepe is on Main Street and Englewood Avenue. They are open for breakfast and lunch everyday of the week but Mondays.
