Unique Eats: Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament School fish fry

It's Friday. And it's Lent. So it's fish fry! This week's Unique Eats takes us to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament School.

On any given Friday during the Lenten season, it is no surprise to see restaurants, fire halls, schools and other community centers serving up fish on a dish.

"Neighborhood fish fry," Michael Piwowarski thought for a moment. "Nothing beats it."

But beneath the beer-batter or the breading, there is something bigger happening at the fish fry inside Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament School. It is fish served with a cause and a few life lessons on the side.

"It's incredible to see these people are coming out," Casey, a student at OLBS, said. "They're like helping you out with what you need for the school."

An average of about 1,000 meals are served each fish fry night at OLBS and all proceeds go back to the school to reduce tuition and buy supplies.

They have your traditional beer-battered or broiled fish for $11 per plate. Plus they offer shrimp, clam or crab cakes, too.

Organizers said they estimate to bring in about $30,000 over the entire fish fry season. It is not just about fundraising though.

"I like hanging out with my friends here and I like interacting with other people and having a lot of conversations with the people that I'm serving," Lindsay Luksch, an OLBS student, said.

When you come to the OLBS fish fry, the school's students are your waiters from the time you are seated, to taking your order, to drinks and of course dessert.

It is teaching some valuable lessons in service, community and even job training.

"I just think this is a great experience for kids working in this because even if they're getting jobs in the future, they might want to be a waiter or waitress, this is good practice for that," Luksch said.

The OLBS fish fry runs every Friday of Lent from 4 to 7 p.m. inside the Depew school's cafeteria on French Road.

You can dine in or take out and don't forget to tip your waiters!
