Unique Eats: National Popcorn Day at Aurora Theatre

Friday is National Popcorn Day and we went to Aurora Theatre to see how they take kernel popping to the next level.

The sounds of popping kernels and the smell of butter...where else would you want to be but a movie theater?

It's a timeless combination.

"They were actually put together long ago when movie theaters first opened," Lynn Kinsella, owner of Aurora Theatre, said of the popcorn and movie combination. "It was an inexpensive snack during the depression and it has just stayed put."

Aurora Theatre is a vintage, single-screen movie house on Main Street in East Aurora. It has been around for more than 90 years. It even has its original concession stand. But there have been some updates, too.

"The Aurora Theatre has been popping popcorn since about 1925 and about three years ago, we started looking at how we could take our popcorn to a different level," Kinsella said. "We decided that the best way to do that is make it gourmet."

Yes, gourmet popcorn.

They have classic popcorn like butter, cheddar and caramel corn.

But then they have some fun. They make apple pie popcorn, cheddar pretzel ale popcorn and Buffalo chicken wing popcorn.

"The Buffalo chicken wing has a mix of hot sauces but it also has a little bit of a blue cheese flavor to it so it comes across a little hot but all of a sudden you get this nice cooling taste of blue cheese," Kinsella explained.

If you are not sure what flavor you would like, you can stop by the the theater for a popcorn tasting and buy in-store or online. They sell their popcorn in gift bags and an assortment of tins. You can also take the popcorn to your seat for a show.

"We have the character and the history that is genuine and authentic that people like," Kinsella said. "We have many people that come in and say 'I remember coming into movies when I was a kid.' And then they come in the lobby and they see that we have gourmet popcorn and it just enhances their experience."

The theater is running a special for National Popcorn Day. When you buy a tin of popcorn, you get another bag free.
