For the second day in a row Buffalo will be dealing with lake effect snow coming off a mostly frozen Lake Erie.

A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for northern Erie and Genesee counties until 7pm Thursday evening.

Like Wednesday, there is a little patch of open water about 40 miles west of Buffalo that is just large enough to produce enough moisture to bring lake effect snows falling at a moderate rate.

In fact, the amount of open water increased a little bit overnight so the amount of moisture available is probably a bit higher.

Given that the snow started later in the morning, as compared to yesterday, we believe that snowfall amounts will be in the 2 to 4 inch range as opposed to the 3 to 6 inch range that we saw Wednesday.

Thursday will feature stronger winds with southwesterly winds between 20 and 30 miles an hour gusting to near 40 miles an hour which will cause a lot of blowing and drifting snow. That will make travel rather tricky and could cause for a slow commute Thursday night.

Temperatures will hover in the low 20s this afternoon which will allow the snow to remain light and fluffy which will make it easier to blow around. Lake snows will likely ease back this evening.
