Spring flood potential decreases for WNY

While there was the risk of river flooding earlier this March, the flood threat is lower heading into the end of the month.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — In the second seasonal flood outlook of Meteorological Spring, the Northeast River Forecast Center (NERFC) isn't anticipating much in the terms of a possible flood threat over the next two weeks.

In the latest outlook valid March 18th through April 1st, the entire Northeast has either equal or below average chances for flooding throughout the above timeframe. Western New York is included in the below average category.

There are a few reasons for this predication. One is the lack of rainfall throughout early March. And while current climate guidance shows the possibility for more days with rain over the next two weeks, an already drier soil that's beginning to thaw and lower river and creeks levels should be able to contain any future rainfall over the next two weeks.

This is good news for Western New Yorkers as there was the risk of minor creek and river flooding as ice jams broke and snow melted earlier this month.

From January 1 through May, the NERFC issues an updated flood outlook for the northeast every other week. The next flood outlook is set to be issued April 1.
