Schedule release for fall 2021 virtual storm spotter training ahead of winter months

The annual training offered by the National Weather Service will be virtual for the second year in a row.

BUFFALO, N.Y. โ€” The National Weather Service office in Buffalo will provide fall storm spotter training coursework online for 2021, but for the second year in a row it will be online.

After attending one of these classes, you will become a registered storm spotter with the National Weather Service and know how you protect your community during weather emergencies.

Topics discussed in the fall session include winter storms, lake effect snow and winter weather safety. NWS forecasters will also go over how to accurately measure snowfall and report it to their office.

Attendees will also learn what to report and how to report those observations to the NWS. Anyone can become a certified Skywarn storm spotter through this NWS program.

During a SKYWARN spring training session, attendees will learn about the technology meteorologists use in weather forecasting and how regionally specific, autumnal natural disasters form. It will cover more timely threats for that season, including severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flash floods.

For those interested in participating, registration is required prior to the scheduled online class. Registration is free and each session is expected to last about two hours. Each session covers the same material, so you only have to register and attend one virtual class. The individual registration forms are linked below.
