BUFFALO, N.Y. - A netting system will soon be going up on the Skyway.

The netting, that will stretch some 1,400 feet around the bridge, will be put in place starting Monday and will cause some lane closures. The installation is expected to take about six weeks. New York State Department of Transportation Spokesperson Susan Surdej explains why its needed.

"This is just an extra safety measure to make sure that nothing will fall as we begin our repair project which is a fascia repair project. We will put that out to bid in spring of 2017."

After that fascia project is complete, the bridge deck itself will be repaired the following winter.

Although only a mile long, the 110-foot high structure gets a lot of use. More than 40-thousand vehicles travel on it each and every day.
