AAA: Gas prices continue to go down

The New York State average price of a gallon of gas has fallen 6 cents since last week, according to AAA.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Drivers across the U.S. are continuing to see some relief at the pump as gas prices fall across the country.

According to the latest report from AAA, the national average price for a gallon of gas dropped 15 cents from last week to $4.21. This time last year the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.17.

The New York State average also decreased this week, but remains higher than the national average. Currently, the average cost for a gallon of gas in New York is $4.52, which is down six cents from last week, according to AAA. This time last year the average price was $3.21.

Here in Western New York, AAA reports the average price of a gallon of gas in Buffalo is $4.51, which is down seven cents from the week prior. In Batavia, the cost of a gallon of gas decreased three cents landing at $4.49. Meanwhile, Rochester saw a seven cent decrease down to $4.61 a gallon.

According to AAA, the trend in decrease gas prices may not hold as demand has increased recently and inventory has dropped. Oil prices hare also fluctuating and an increase in the cost of oil could lead to a gas price increase as well.

While gas prices remain high, AAA says drivers can conserve fuel by mapping their routes, avoiding peak traffic times, using cruise control when possible and combining errands into one trip.

AAA also notes that drivers should make sure their vehicle's tire pressure is at the recommended level to achieve the best gas mileage. Drivers should also remove any unnecessary and bulky items from their vehicle because it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
