BUFFALO, NY -- Friday, Sabres general manager Jason Botterill pulled off the first major trade of his tenure.

Botterill sent forward Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno to the Minnesota Wild. In exchange he got defenseman Marco Scandella and forward Jason Pominville. Pominville is a former Sabres captain. The teams also exchanged draft choices.

With free agency getting underway at 12 noon Saturday, what will the Sabres do? They've added three defenseman to the organization since the season ended. Victor Antipin, Nathan Beaulieu and Scandella are new additions and they have Brandon Guhle in the pipeline. That doesn't mean Botterill doesn't want even more defense or is done dealing.

In a conference call Friday afternoon, Botterill said: "Let's be honest, as NHL general managers, we're always looking for more. We're very greedy. You always want to have more defense up there. The expectation for tomorrow would probably be more positional players, finding the right fit vs. a big bang. We don't have to force issues here. There's something that makes our team better, we'll certainly do it but we don't have to do anything crazy"

The Sabres open the regular season Thursday October 5 against the Montreal Canadiens.
